Big Step for Tomorrow’s Leaders: ZWW Celebrates Its Graduates

Respect and Congratulations: 13 Students Receive Their Certificates After Completing Continuing Education Programs at HSU/UniBw H. In a festive ceremony, 13 students from the five current continuing education programs at Helmut Schmidt University / University of the Bundeswehr Hamburg (HSU/UniBw H) were awarded their certificates after successfully completing their university-level additional qualifications.

These five programs are designed to equip professionals and leaders—primarily from federal agencies and military units—with advanced management and leadership skills to tackle complex tasks in highly specialized fields. Admission to these programs requires a first academic degree and at least two years of professional experience, including one year in a leadership role.
The programs are coordinated by the Center for Scientific Continuing Education (ZWW), led by Professor Dr. Tobias Scheytt. In his address, he thanked all instructors and cooperation partners—especially the graduates—saying: “You are the best a university can hope to achieve. You are the reason we are here.”
Guest speaker Lieutenant General (ret.) Martin Schelleis of the German Air Force emphasized the need to think beyond traditional frameworks to build a more resilient, democratic society—particularly in the face of growing threats from authoritarian regimes. “You, as graduates, are at the forefront of this effort,” he said. “Your work will have lasting effects on the security and resilience of our society.”
Professor Dr. Christina Schaefer, Vice President for International Affairs at HSU/UniBw H, highlighted the critical importance of students and their thoughtful questions and constructive feedback in driving continuous (self-)improvement in research and teaching at the university.

“You chose the path of lifelong learning,” said Professor Dr. Gary S. Schaal, Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences at HSU/UniBw H, paying tribute to the graduates. With the awarding of certificates, he noted, they had reached a “milestone in your intellectual development.”

Of the current 469 participants across the continuing education programs, 268 are enrolled in the program Military Leadership and International Security (MFIS), making it the largest cohort. 103 students come from abroad. And notably, for the first time since the founding of the ZWW in 2013, an African woman—Anthonia Elelegwu-Egbujiobi—is among the graduates.
