Corona pandemic, the attack on Ukraine: Those who began their continuing education master’s program „Leadership in Medicine“ (FIM) at the Helmut Schmidt University/University of the German Armed Forces Hamburg (HSU/UniBw H) in 2020 faced significant additional challenges due to the course of world history. All the more, we are delighted that the first graduates of this cohort of 21 students have successfully overcome all obstacles. Dr. Susanne Sommer, Prof. Dr. Dirk Steinritz, Dr. Birte Diekmeyer, Dr. Katrin Thinnes, and Michael Bernhard Hinrichs recently received their certificates during a festive event at HSU/UniBw H.
In their speeches, Prof. Dr. jur. Margarete Schuler-Harms, Vice President for Research at HSU/UniBw H, Generalarzt a.D. Dr. Joachim Hoitz, former Commander and Medical Director of the German Armed Forces Hospital Hamburg, and Prof. Dr. Tobias Scheytt, Head of the Center for Postgraduate Studies (ZWW) and Program Director of FIM, emphasized the extraordinary achievement of the newly graduated master’s students.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the cohort did not start in April, as originally planned, but in August 2020. The course schedule had to be modified multiple times as the students—already medical professionals—were involved in tackling the pandemic. As a result, and due to the war in Ukraine, the program was extended by almost two years. Instead of finishing in the spring of 2022, students could only complete the last module in the winter of 2023. The pandemic also forced both instructors and students to meet online several times, whereas the FIM program is typically conducted entirely in person.
In the continuing education master’s program FIM, students, as future leaders of the command authority, develop and deepen their skills in analyzing, designing, and managing leadership tasks in the military healthcare sector.
Qualified applicants can still apply for the next cohort (starting September 2024) until May 31, 2024. The program is explicitly open to civilian applicants as well.
