Civil-Military Interaction (M.A.)

Start of the study programme Nov. 1st, 2025 and Nov. 1st, 2027

This programme aims at preparing future executives and staff members to take over leadership responsibilities in the area of civil-military cooperation in conflicts and crises. It is offered in cooperation with the Civil-Military Cooperation Centre of Excellence (CCOE): Two high-quality courses offered by CCOE in The Hague, Netherlands are a compulsory part of the programme.

    Future military and civilian executive and staff members of the Bundeswehr and NATO, as well as from NGOs and governmental agencies. Participation is also possible for members of other armed forces, including those from international contexts.

Program contents and module handbook:

Classroom sessions (for the time being: virtual or hybrid) studies combined with problem-based learning phases. 9 compulsory modules, 2 of which are completed at the CCOE (link to the CCOE schedule of the 2 courses) and 7 of which are completed at the Helmut Schmidt University (HSU), including a final module with a master’s thesis.

Admission requirements and Program and Examination Regulations

(1) A total of 240 ECTS credit points achieved for completion of one or more study programs at a German or foreign institute of higher education

(2) At least two years of vocational activity, including at least one year with management responsibility, after obtaining a higher-education degree

(3) Proof of English language skills required for the studies and examinations corresponding to the C1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Organization of the program:

In-service online studies combined with compact attendance-based classes comprising 9 compulsory courses, 2 of which are organised from the CCOE and 7 of which are organised from the Helmut Schmidt University (HSU/UniBw H), including a final course with a master’s thesis.

The courses of the study programme are organized in trimester periods. Each year of study has three trimesters: autumn trimester (HT) from October to December, winter trimester (WT) from January to March and spring trimester (FT) from April to June. The summer (trimester) break is from July to September. The focus in the study programme is on blended learning phase with additional online sessions with an amount of 45 ECTS-LP. For each course the student gets 5 ECTS-LP with a workload of 125 hours. Here online sessions and blended learning phases are included.
The online sessions are every four/six weeks from Friday afternoon 04:00 p.m. till Sunday afternoon 03:00 p.m. No classes are during holidays and during the summer, (short) winter, (short autumn) break. To finish the study programme, students have to write a master thesis (15 ECTS-LP). The study programme is organized by the Centre for Postgraduate Education of the Helmut Schmidt University/ University of the German Armed Forces in Hamburg.
