Leadership in the Medical Field (MA or MSc)

Start: 1 September 2026 and 1 September 2028

The changes in the medical and pharmaceutical professions are complex and diverse. The central qualification objective of this program is to provide (future) leaders with the further training they need to analyze, develop and design interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary leadership tasks across the entire spectrum of functions in a medical or pharmaceutical facility, to take a scientific approach to handling relevant issues and be methodical when solving associated problems, and thus to successfully and responsibly deal with change and transformation processes in a competitive professional context. The study program is characterized by its specific interdisciplinary and didactic profile, the examination of academic theories – including elements of problem-oriented learning –, the challenge of intensive cooperation with other students, and the comprehensive support of teaching staff from different disciplines. The program has an interdisciplinary focus. Specialization and elective modules help students to choose between option I (Master of Science), which focuses more on quantitative methods and instruments of leadership, and option II (Master of Arts) with more focus on subjects such as leadership, personnel and organizational development. Option II allows participants to choose between the focus areas “Personnel Management and Promotion of Young Talent” and “Management of Change and Innovation”.

Organization of the program:

In-service program in a blended-learning format with compact in-person and online learning phases. 9 compulsory modules, 4 of which are basic modules, 5 specialized modules on interdisciplinary topics (different for MA and MSc students) and a final module with a master’s thesis.

The program follows a modular structure. The modules are based on the trimester dates of HSU/UniBw H. Each academic year comprises three trimesters. The autumn trimester (HT) runs from October to December, the winter trimester (WT) from January to March and the spring trimester (FT) from April to June. The lecture-free period at HSU/UniBw H is from July to September. The focus of the program is on self-study (blended learning), supplemented by in-person classes worth 45 ECTS credit points. Each module is worth 5 ECTS credit points. This accounts for a workload of 125 hours (including in-person and remote learning phases).
In-person courses take place every 4 to 6 weeks from 4 p.m. on Thursday afternoon to Saturday noon. Soldiers are detailed by the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Personnel Management, after which they can make travel arrangements.
Lecture-free periods and German public holidays are taken into account when planning the in-person courses. At the end of the study program, a master’s thesis must be submitted worth 15 ECTS credit points. This study program is organized by the Center for Postgraduate Studies at Helmut Schmidt University/Bundeswehr University Hamburg (HSU/UniBw H).
