Center for Postgraduate Studies (ZWW)

Your partner for in-depth further training of the highest quality.

The Centre for Postgraduate Studies (ZWW) was established in 2013 as a central facility of Helmut Schmidt Universität/University of the German Armed Forces Hamburg (HSU/UniBw H). It is committed to the central idea of education through science and lifelong learning. The purpose of the ZWW is to offer high-quality postgraduate study programmes as well as smaller further education packages of a high academic standard. This makes it stand out from the spectrum provided by private institutions of the further education market.

In addition, the ZWW is one of the signatories of the Charter of Diversity and has thus committed itself to not only observe diversity and equal opportunities but to make them a central aspect of its activities. In accordance with its statutes, the ZWW has two organs: a chairperson from among the professors, who performs this job in a secondary function, and an advisory board. The advisory board assumes advisory and monitoring tasks with respect to the content development of the ZWW. Further information is provided in the statutes.

History

Profile and Mission statement

Profile

Students of the ZWW always have a first university degree qualifying for a profession and at least two years of professional experience, including one year with leadership responsibility. Accordingly, the students are generally specialists and management personnel from highly specialised fields of activity whose need for further education mostly arises from having to cope with complex leadership tasks.
Another characteristic of the ZWW’s profile is its focus on further education requirements of the public sector. What makes the ZWW unique is that it teaches management and leadership competencies tailored to the specific needs of federal authorities and the military, both nationally and to an increasing extent also internationally. The main target group of the ZWW includes the Bundeswehr, members of the armed forces of friendly nations, civilian institutions cooperating with military facilities (government organisations, NGOs) and various federal ministries and their subordinate authorities.

Mission Statement

The Centre is committed to the idea of lifelong and independent learning. It supports the faculties in offering their postgraduate programmes and develops its further education packages strictly in line with the profile of HSU/UniBw H. This includes the idea of an internationally open university with a focus on accepting students from various federal ministries, ensuring the flexible orientation of degree programmes and further education packages towards the concrete, specific requirements of federal ministries, federal and state administrations and NGOs.
The ZWW supplements the undergraduate programmes offered at HSU/UniBw H with a varied and innovative range of postgraduate study programmes and further education packages which are geared towards the professional fields of our postgraduate students.
The degree programmes at ZWW provide both military and civilian professionals with opportunities for lifelong learning in the designated academic fields of HSU/UniBw H. Thus, the ZWW leads the way for HSU/UniBw H to develop into a university that is part of a national and international network and increasingly welcomes applicants from various federal ministries and agencies.

Postgraduate education opportunities

We currently offer five Master’s programmes and a range of other further education packages (certificate programmes and certificates of attendance). For more information, see our academic programmes.

Lecturers

Learning and teaching in postgraduate training are ensured through the selection of suitable lecturers with a high level of professional expertise and extensive practical experience. The students have opportunities for dialogue with lecturers both during and outside classroom phases. During the blended learning phases, lecturers will offer their support through the ILIAS online learning environment.
The lecturers are committed to the quality concept of the ZWW and provide skills-oriented postgraduate training that is truly compatible with everyday professional practice. Lecturing personnel include the professors and research associates of HSU/UniBw H as well as external lecturers.

Professors and research associates of HSU/UniBw H

They teach courses in postgraduate degree programmes above and beyond their regular teaching obligations and research duties. The professors and research associates of HSU/UniBw H who are active at the ZWW belong to the faculties of Humanities and Social Sciences, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Civil Engineering and Economic and Social Sciences.
A minimum of one HSU/UniBw H professor is responsible for each course in order to guarantee teaching. This assures students that their courses will be organised efficiently all the way through to their final grade. The professors are also available as supervisors for the Master’s thesis.

External lecturers

In addition to HSU professors and research associates, external lecturers are also involved in the courses of the Master’s programmes. These external lecturers generally have many years of practical experience in their field of activity and/or are qualified experts in their specialist fields. Involving external experts contributes to the transfer of knowledge and provides students with in-depth insights into the current challenges of professional practice.

Cooperation projects

The ZWW implements postgraduate study programmes and other further education packages on the basis of certificates/certificates of attendance in close cooperation with the faculties of HSU/UniBw H. While the ZWW is responsible for the organisation of postgraduate education, the faculties are the driving force behind the development of postgraduate training initiatives. The faculties are also in charge of examinations and provide dedicated examination committees for the postgraduate programmes.

Our external partners with whom we cooperate on postgraduate training include the Federal Ministry of Defence, the Federal Ministry of Finance, the Federal Office of Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance, the Bundeswehr Command and Staff College, the Bundeswehr Medical Service, the Civil-Military Cooperation Centre of Excellence, the Air Force, the Joint Support Service, the Hamburg Police and many other institutions.

Our lecturers mainly come from the faculties of HSU/UniBw H but we also include experts from many renowned universities in Germany and abroad.
The ZWW is an active member of the German association for academic postgraduate and distance education (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Wissenschaftliche Weiterbildung und Fernstudium e.V.) and its northern section.

Quality management

Our concept of quality

The ZWW is committed to ensuring that the education it offers meets scientific and academic standards. As part of this commitment, the ZWW fosters close connections between professional practice and academic studies through research-based teaching and learning. For this purpose, it translates Humboldt’s ideal of the unity of teaching and research into modern formats of reflexive skills development. By taking an academic approach to their professional practice, our postgraduate students can achieve greater levels of reflection and benefit from new ways of developing responsible and purposeful leadership skills. In this sense, HSU/UniBw H considers itself responsible for widening the academic horizons of its postgraduate students in their professional practice.
The ZWW attaches great importance to the high quality of personalised higher education as part of lifelong learning. Lifelong learning is thus designed to focus on student needs and skills acquisition. It meets the requirements of both the European Qualifications Framework (EQF) and the German Qualifications Framework for lifelong learning (DQR). In accordance with the European and German qualifications frameworks for lifelong learning, the Master’s programmes apply appropriate didactic concepts to help the students develop knowledge, capabilities and skills. In-person seminars, working groups and workshops are combined with online-based blended learning, thus enabling students to achieve their learning objectives and results at their own pace.
To achieve this aim, both teaching and learning at the ZWW are subject to constant quality assurance and professional further development on the basis of evaluation and accreditation procedures. The ZWW and its lecturers champion modern and innovative teaching in higher education and are committed to the quality standards of higher education didactics.

Quality assurance

The Centre for Postgraduate Education of HSU/UniBw H has an established quality assurance system: The ACQUIN accreditation institute reviews all degree programmes as part of their accreditation process. The accreditation reports are available on the Institute’s website (link). Notes and recommendations from the review process are used to continuously improve the quality of the programmes. All courses are regularly evaluated on the basis of the evaluation regulations of HSU/UniBw H. Advisory services are provided by the chairs of the respective faculties as required by the students; interdisciplinary issues may also be clarified with the chairpersons of the examination committees of the faculties or the chairperson of the ZWW. Organisational matters are handled by the University Secretariat. All documents relevant to courses and examinations are available to students via the internet and intranet. Relevant materials on the degree programmes, the individual courses and institutional support for students completing postgraduate training are made available via the ILIAS online learning platform. This includes information on the programmes, the relevant committees, the library, the examination office, e-learning, the student representatives’ council and the military department. The information and documents are regularly updatet.
